Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa: A Restaurant Rooted in Ritual, Styled for the Present

More than a place to eat, Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa’s latest outlet is a fully immersive experience, where interior design choices highlight the beauty of age-old grilling techniques.

Located at Shaw Centre along Scotts Road, Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa’s newest Singapore outlet is a quiet yet striking presence. Known for its legacy in unagi wholesaling since 1932, the brand’s philosophy of precision, quality, and care is now extended into the dining space itself.

Stepping into the space, diners are instantly enveloped by the soft glow of shoji-style paneling, warm wood tones, and gentle lighting. The interior space echoes the brand’s philosophy: precision, refinement, and deep respect for tradition. From the seamless entrance framed by natural textures to the functional open kitchen layout, every detail is intentional — allowing guests to observe the preparation of the signature Ippon Unagi in its full authenticity.

Each step, from filleting to charcoal grilling, is performed with skill and confidence, reflecting the brand’s four generations of culinary heritage.

The dining area balances openness with intimacy. Flexible booth seating, private cubicles, and communal tables cater to all occasions, from casual lunches to formal gatherings. The subtle interplay of textures — from soft banquettes to textured plaster walls — enhances the sensorial experience of dining.

More than just a restaurant, the design reflects the brand’s 90-year legacy as a reputable eel wholesaler. HW Homeworks honours this heritage by creating a space that feels both traditional and elevated, where diners can witness the hand-crafted process behind every grilled eel dish, from Mekiki (selection) to Yaki (grilling).

In bringing Japanese omotenashi to life through space, the design ensures that every moment — from entry to the final bite — is thoughtfully considered.
