The phishing page may look real, but even one wrong tap can lead to full account takeover.

A new WhatsApp scam has surfaced in Singapore, and this time it starts with a simple SMS. Victims receive a message claiming their WhatsApp account requires verification, followed by a link that appears to lead to the official website. However, this link redirects to a phishing page designed to steal login details. Once entered, scammers hijack the account and send fraudulent loan requests to the victim’s contacts.

The signs are subtle. The scam messages use urgent language to press users into acting quickly. The fake site mimics WhatsApp’s interface closely. Most victims only realise they have been scammed after being logged out, seeing unfamiliar linked devices, or receiving alerts from concerned friends.

The Singapore Police Force urges the public to stay alert. The best pro
tection is to never click on suspicious links, even if they appear to come from WhatsApp. Instead, verify unusual messages through direct phone calls and regularly check for unauthorised linked devices. Users should also enable Two-Step Verification on WhatsApp to secure their account.
Falling for a phishing scam can happen in seconds. Educating others is just as important as protecting yourself.
