Another Oil Spill Halts Water Activities in Singapore

A recent oil spill from a Shell pipeline at Pulau Bukom has led to a temporary halt on swimming and other water activities at several popular beaches.

Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) issued an advisory on 21 October 2024, urging the public to avoid contact with the waters at East Coast Park, Kusu Island, St John’s Island, and Lazarus Island as a precaution due to the oil spill.

The oil began leaking in the early hours of 20 October from a land-based pipeline operated by Shell between Bukom Island and Bukom Kecil. In response, NEA has deployed oil-absorbent booms in canals and key areas of East Coast Park and West Coast Park to contain the spill.

Water activities at Sentosa’s Tanjong Beach, Palawan Beach, and Siloso Beach remain unaffected for now. NEA will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
