A recent TikTok video has sparked widespread outrage after a content creator shared what she described as a “genius travel hack” involving washing her underwear in a hotel room coffee machine.

In the now viral clip, she claimed she learned the trick from an air attendent friend and suggested that many people already know this method. She demonstrated placing her underwear into the coffee machine’s water compartment and running hot water through it to clean the garment. She presented it as a practical solution for travellers who need to wash clothes quickly in their rooms.

The hotel she stayed at has allegedly replaced all the coffee machines in the affected rooms and begun legal proceedings against her, seeking damages of up to $1 million. However, this was denied by the now-infamous Tiktoker, who ironically claims to create content about nutrition, fitness and fun.

Why This Coffee Machine Travel Hack Is Deeply Inappropriate

Hotel coffee machines and hot water flasks are communal use appliances. They are meant strictly for preparing beverages. They are not designed for laundering clothing, especially intimate garments.

Our bodies carry bacteria and viruses that can be present in sweat, bodily fluids, and fecal matter. Many pathogens are capable of surviving outside the body for varying periods of time. When underwear is placed inside beverage equipment, the internal surfaces can become contaminated.

These machines are not built to be medically sterilised after such misuse. Standard housekeeping procedures are not designed to handle this kind of exposure. The next guest may unknowingly brew coffee from equipment that has been used for washing underwear. That alone explains the strong public reaction.

Hot water does not automatically equal proper sanitisation. Effective disinfection requires sustained high temperatures and appropriate cleaning agents. Simply running hot water through a coffee machine does not meet those standards.

Responsible Ways To Wash Clothes While Travelling

Travellers have been washing clothes responsibly in hotel rooms for decades without compromising shared equipment.

If you need to wash small items while travelling:

  • Use the bathtub or bathroom basin with soap or travel detergent.

  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  • If hot water is needed, boil water using the kettle for its intended purpose, then pour it into the basin or tub where the clothes are soaking.

  • Wring gently and hang to dry in a ventilated area, or supplement with the use a hair dryer.

These methods keep personal hygiene separate from appliances meant for food and beverages.

It is understandable if this viral incident has left some travellers feeling uneasy about using hotel coffee machines and flasks. Once such behaviour is broadcast widely, imitation can follow.

Realistically, fully sterilising small internal appliance components is challenging. This likely explains why the hotel reportedly replaced the affected machines altogether.

If you are concerned, consider simple precautions:

  • Bring your own travel flask.

  • Pack a personal travel mug.

  • Carry freeze dried coffee or tea sachets.

  • Use sealed bottled water instead of in room appliances.

These measures offer peace of mind without resorting to panic.

A Question Of Common Sense

Travel hacks can be creative and useful. Howver, they should never compromise hygiene or public health. This incident about the coffee machine travel hack highlights a larger issue in the era of viral content. Anyone can present themselves as an authority online. That does not mean every tip shared is responsible or safe.

Framing unsanitary behaviour as clever or insider knowledge reflects poor judgement and a lack of social responsibility. Convenience does not outweigh communal wellbeing.

A little common sense goes a long way. Shared spaces require shared respect. When travelling, consideration for the next guest should be the baseline standard.

Not every hack deserves attention, and certainly not one that belongs nowhere near your morning coffee.
