After backlash over book disposal, NUS responds with a farewell event inviting alumni, students, and the public to give the books a new home.
What began as an upsetting sight—a truck loaded with rubbish bags filled with books—has since turned into a movement of preservation, reflection, and renewed appreciation for knowledge.
On 20 May 2025, images showing Yale-NUS library books being packed into disposal bags and carted off to be recycled triggered an outcry. Alumni, students, and faculty expressed frustration over what appeared to be the mishandling of materials from a now-defunct institution. The response was swift. Around 8,500 books were eventually salvaged, and NUS has since issued an apology.
In a statement, Associate Professor Pang, the university librarian, acknowledged that more should have been done to consult faculty and understand student interest. A new protocol will now be implemented across NUS Libraries, ensuring wider outreach before any future removals.
As part of this response, the Yale-NUS Library Book Adoption Drive has been launched, offering books to anyone who wishes to give them a second life. The initiative begins on 28 May 2025 and runs through 9 June 2025, starting first with access for Yale-NUS faculty, staff, alumni and their families, before opening up to the wider NUS community and public.

The book adoption is free of charge. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes and may adopt as many books as they like, though resale is not permitted. The event also serves as a farewell to the beloved Yale-NUS Library space—light refreshments will be provided.
