Starting April 1, 2024, motorists beware: red light cameras will not only be watching for infractions at intersections but will also be equipped with speed enforcement capabilities. This means that exceeding speed limits while passing through these monitored areas could result in demerit points being added to your driving license.

The integration of speed enforcement functions into red light cameras represents a significant enhancement in traffic monitoring and safety measures. Beyond capturing violations related to running red lights, these cameras will now also track vehicle speeds, ensuring that drivers adhere to designated speed limits.
For drivers, this development serves as a reminder to exercise caution and maintain compliance with traffic regulations at all times. Exceeding speed limits not only poses risks to road safety but can now also lead to repercussions in the form of demerit points on one's driving license.
If your speed exceeds the limit by... | Demerit Points |
1 to 20 km/h | 4 |
21 to 30 km/h | 6 |
31 to 40 km/h | 8 |

Demerit points are a means of penalizing motorists for traffic violations, with accumulated points potentially leading to consequences such as license suspension or revocation. Therefore, it is imperative for motorists to remain vigilant and adhere to speed limits, particularly in areas where red light cameras are in operation.
Demerit points accrued are not permanent; they are automatically waived if the driver avoids accumulating any further demerit points for a period of 12 months following their last offense. Motorists who accumulate 24 demerit points or more are subject to immediate license suspension.
As the new enforcement measures take effect, drivers are advised to familiarize themselves with the speed limits in their vicinity and exercise caution when approaching intersections monitored by red light cameras. By driving responsibly and within the confines of the law, motorists can contribute to creating a safer and more orderly road environment for all.
