What is Clubhouse? How does it work?

A unique addition to the social media app industry, Clubhouse is an exclusive social networking app based on live audio conversations. Many people liken it to a podcast but with more exclusivity.

Why exclusive?

As so far, you can only join this app through invites, and it is currently available only on iOS. However, the company does mention that they will open it up on Android as well! So, let’s wait!

Clubhouse app works just like a convention panel where several speakers share their thoughts on a subject, a moderator who oversees the discussions, and a group of audience who is listening to the speakers. However, the difference is that the app applies a physical convention panel concept to a virtual platform. It allows its users to host an audio chat room and also to join live audio conversations in various chat rooms that they are interested in. The topics are extensive, ranging from tech, music, arts, books, spirituality, education, sports, etc.

“It’s also kind of like a Zoom Conference Call but with only audio! No camera on!”

There are usually two groups of people in each audio chat room: those who are talking and those who are listening. Participants in the audio chat room can see a list of everyone in the conversation, and the number of participants can go up to even thousands. There will be a moderator in each audio chat room with the mic and power to let the audience speak when they raise their ‘virtual hands' to ask questions during the discussions.

“Once in, users can set up private rooms, schedule public discussions, form clubs and interest groups, and find new and interesting people to follow and engage with on the app.”

How do you join this app?

Unlike other social media apps, Clubhouse cannot just be downloaded off the app store to create an account. You have to be invited by an existing Clubhouse user to set up an account. Oh well… Very elitist!

Clubhouse is only through invites

When your friend sends you an invite, you will see a link texted to your phone number. As you click it, you will be directed to a sign-up page in the app. After setting up your account, the name of the person who invites you will be written on your Clubhouse profile as someone who has nominated you to the Clubhouse.

For a start, you will only be allocated two invites to be given out to your friends. As you engage more in using Clubhouse, you will get more invites to bring more friends. Or else, you can just sign up and be on their waiting list until someone invites you in! Another way is to buy the invitations online. Hmmm, but is it worth the money yet? Let’s leave you to decide!
